TORONTO, Ontario – The Beguiling is pleased to announce the opening of North America’s first children’s comic shop—Little Island Comics! Offering the widest possible array of graphic novels, manga and comics for people 12 years old and younger, Little Island Comics will also present a robust roster of children’s programming and workshops in its ample events space in the weeks and months to come.

Little Island Comics is founded by The Beguiling, one of North America’s premier comic book and graphic novel retailers. The Beguiling was the inaugural recipient of the Will Eisner Spirit of Retailing Award, and has been celebrated by comics creators including Neil Gaiman (Coraline, Odd and the Frost Giants), Kazu Kibuishi (Amulet), and Jeff Smith (Bone, Rasl). With The Beguiling entering its 25th year as North America’s destination for all things comics, the opening of Little Island Comics marks an expansion into an underexplored retail niche—comics for kids!

“We’ve always strived to present the fullest picture of what the comic book medium has to offer readers of all ages,” said The Beguiling’s Owner Peter Birkemoe. “With the bright, colourful, and kid-friendly new space we’re going to be able to directly engage that next generation of comics readers, offering them everything from hit graphic novels like Bone to classic comic strips including Peanuts and Moomin, and even some great Japanese manga like Swans in Space.”

“It’s everything we were able to offer kids at The Beguiling, and so much more,” he added.

Little Island Comics is located on Bathurst Street just south of Bloor, a short block from its parent store and just a few doors away from the recently-moved Sonic Boom record shop, making their Mirvish Village neighbourhood a single stop for comics and culture for the whole family! The design of the new store incorporates a versatile events space in anticipation of author and creator events. Through a schedule of kids’ how-to comics workshops, Little Island will inspire a new generation of comics writers and artists! For more information, and to keep up to date with programming and workshops, visit http://littleislandcomics.com.

Little Island Comics will be staffed by The Beguiling’s Library Services team, which has been helping school and public libraries curate their comics collections for more than ten years. Comics as a medium has become a mainstay of educational library collections in the last decade, and parents and educators will appreciate the expert help in selecting titles that address curriculum objectives, learning challenges, and a wide variety of reading levels. Kids will appreciate the engaging visual storytelling in some of today’s most popular books for young people!

While the official opening party will occur later into September, Little Island Comics is now open for business from 11am-7pm Monday-Saturday, and 12pm-6pm on Sunday, for all of your kids-comics needs.

Hi there,

My name is Michael Mendoza and I am a teacher librarian at North Prep Jr PS. Every time on my way home from work I am amazed how cool your store is. Kid friendly and very inviting. Since January of this year as part of my library programming my focus for this year’s author visits to our school is about graphic text. Students have learned about graphic text, the different types and how they too can create their own comic strips to explain and convey their own messages about important ideas such as antibullying and how to be environmentally friendly (making the green choice). Needless to say, they are LOVING it. So we have two amazing authors coming to our school and as part of a surprise I was hoping to giveaway free comic books for the kids. I will have a total of 125 kids that I want to receive a comic book at the end of the author presentations. If possible, I would like to schedule a time to meet. I am free after 4pm. My concern is getting a bulk discount (125 comics books) but also having the comics that range in age appropriateness. I have students from grade 2 to grade 6. The interest from grade 4 to 6 is MANGA. We have ZERO mangas at our school. Please let me know what you can do for me. I would really appreciate it. I am in the process of canvassing other book stores to make this years author visit event a very memorable one. I am leaving the school this year and as sad as I am – it is for the better.

Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.

dear little island I think you shoud change your policy about returning books that you can only get a gift certificate back because of an extreamly bad situation today at litle island book store , I whent to buy a gift and then I got it , decided It was not wright then tried to return it and only got A certificate back and I am not the most wealthy person and a small store like you should be doing everything they can to make busness . ;(

Hi Gmsz,

Thanks for your note. Except in very rare circumstances, we only offer gift certificates when titles are returned. Our gift certificates are good at both Little Island and The Beguiling, and they never expire.

If the title we recommended to you yesterday wasn’t right for your needs, we’re happy to make that better. We have thousands of kids comics in stock right now, and our booksellers are ready with their expert knowledge to help you find something perfect!

Thank you for shopping with us, and I do hope we see you in the store again!

-Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, Manager, Little Island Comics

Many thanks to Andrew for your most excellent tour and talk about all things graphic novel! Kids Lit Quiz Team Canada loved their time with you at LittleIslandComics! I am sure you will see them(and us) again!
We appreciate your help in preparing them for the KLQ World Final in July!
